Who is responsible
This website is run by Ruth Croft, as an individual. She is responsible for the personal data collected here (the "data controller"). You can reach her through the contact form.
What we collect
When you join the newsletter, we keep:
- your email address;
- the consent text you agreed to, and when you agreed;
- the page you signed up on;
- the campaign tags in the link that brought you here (UTM tags), if any;
- your country, estimated from your connection.
We do not ask for your name. When you use the contact form, we keep what you send so we can reply: the topic, your name, your email, your organisation if you give it, and your message.
Why we use it
Your email address is used for one thing: a newsletter, about once a month. You only start receiving it after you confirm your address by clicking the link in our confirmation email (double opt-in). We rely on your consent, and you can withdraw it at any time. The page, campaign tags and country only tell us how people find the site. Contact messages are used only to answer them.
Who helps us
- Supabase stores the newsletter list and contact messages, in the European Union.
- Resend sends our emails.
- Vercel hosts the website and measures visits with Vercel Web Analytics, which uses no cookies.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that forms are sent by people, not bots.
They handle data only on our instructions. Some of them may process it outside your country; where that happens, standard safeguards for international transfers apply.
How long we keep it
We keep your newsletter details until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only a minimal record (your email address, the consent you once gave and the date you unsubscribed) so we can honour your opt-out and never email you by mistake. The page, campaign tags and country are deleted at that point. Contact messages are kept only as long as we need them to deal with your request.
Your rights
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, and you can object to how we use it. Send your request through the contact form. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to your data protection authority; in New Zealand, that is the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
How to unsubscribe
Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click is enough, and it takes effect straight away. You can also ask us through the contact form.
Cookies
We use no advertising or tracking cookies. If you change the audio language or subtitles in our own video player, a small cookie remembers your choice. The YouTube player loads only when you press play, from youtube-nocookie.com, and from then on Google's privacy policy applies to it.
